Autumn event risk warning for farmers and landowners

October 9th 2024

As we head into autumn, many of us are preparing to host or attend seasonal events such as scarecrow festivals, bonfires and other outdoor gatherings.

These festivities are fantastic for bringing communities together, but they also come with safety risks that can’t be overlooked.

It’s essential for farmers and landowners to be fully aware of the potential hazards and take proactive steps to ensure that both their guests and properties are protected.

One of the most significant risks associated with autumn events is fire, particularly for farms with dry crops or hay bales. Bonfires and fireworks, while adding to the seasonal atmosphere, can quickly become dangerous if not managed properly. Ensuring there are safety measures in place, such as firebreaks and fire extinguishers, is crucial, along with having someone responsible for overseeing any fires.

Public liability is another major concern. Accidents, such as slips on muddy paths, incidents during activities such as pumpkin carving or vehicle damage in unmarked parking areas can result in significant compensation claims.

It’s important to review insurance cover to make sure all planned activities are accounted for and any potential risks are mitigated.

If livestock are present, it’s vital they are securely fenced off to prevent any unwanted interactions with visitors, which could lead to injuries or even animals escaping.

Additionally, temporary structures such as marquees and stages need to be securely installed to withstand the unpredictable autumn weather, particularly strong winds. These structures should also be covered by adequate insurance to prevent costly repairs in case of damage.

Getting the necessary permissions from local authorities is another essential step. This process takes into account various factors such as fire hazards, water supply and traffic congestion, ensuring that events run smoothly and safely.

Visitor safety should always be a top priority. Clear signage, well-lit paths and carefully planned parking areas help to reduce the risk of accidents. And, of course, having contingency plans in place for adverse weather conditions is a must.

By taking these precautions, farmers and landowners can ensure that their autumn events are both enjoyable and safe for everyone involved, while protecting their properties and avoiding unexpected incidents.
