Racehorse and Yearling Insurance

Most racehorses and yearlings are primarily insured against death in order to protect the capital value that they represent.

A great number of horses are insured from purchase and Lycetts is contacted before the transfer of ownership. However, some individuals wish only to take our racehorse and yearling insurance when the horse has achieved a certain value. For example, if they have won a listed or group race.

Our client base is split into two categories; private individuals who own horses for pleasure and for whom we offer a very professional and dedicated service; and those individuals who own horses as a business. When a horse is regarded as a business asset, insurance is often a necessity.

Our staff are experienced in this area and our policies are differentiated to reflect nuances in the industry. We also have access to the very best veterinary advice and other specialists in this field, primarily in the UK and America.

We are trusted to insure high value racehorses – in some cases the cover provided extends into the millions of pounds – and part of our success is that we are totally confidential in our dealings. Long relationships with clients who are transacting very sensitive deals has led us to be the most trusted specialist advisor in this field.

How to claim racehorse and yearling insurance

If your horse is currently suffering from a life threatening injury, illness or disease, please contact your relevant office by telephone without delay:

Newmarket: 01638 676 700

Marlborough: 01672 512 512

Please note that both of these offices have designated emergency staff who deal with incidents which happen in the evening or at the weekend and an answering machine will direct you accordingly. In particular, we are used to receiving calls concerning life-threatening fractures, colic and horses which are about to be operated on under general anaesthetic.

If your horse has already died, please advise us during working hours at your earliest opportunity and send us the following:

  • A post mortem report.
  • A report from the attending vet.
  • A completed claim form (which we will send to you upon receipt of notification of loss).
